Frequently Asked Questions

What are your fees?
I charge $125 per 53-minute hour.

Do you take insurance?
Yes! I accept commercial plans with:

  • Aetna

  • Anthem/Blue Cross/Blue Shield

  • Passport

  • United Healthcare

If I do not accept your insurance, I am happy to supply you with a superbill (itemized statement) if you’d like to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance company.

If I use insurance, how much will I have to pay out of pocket?

This varies widely based on your insurance company, the type of plan you have, and whether or not you’ve met your deductible for the year. The answer could be anywhere between $0 and my full fee of $125. I strongly encourage you to call your insurance company to verify your benefits and that I am in-network before our first session. I do my best to verify benefits myself, but I cannot guarantee that the information I get from your insurance company is accurate. Clients are responsible for any remaining balance not covered by insurance.

What ages do you treat?
Anyone 18 or older.

Do you see couples?
No. While a client may occasionally have a partner, family member, or friend join them for a session or two to address a specific issue, I don’t offer couple’s counseling on an ongoing basis. There are plenty of marriage and family therapists who have much more expertise with couples than I do, and I’d be happy to refer you to one if needed.

Do you write letters of support for people seeking gender-affirming healthcare?
Yes! To write a letter of support I evaluate clients in three areas: whether they meet the criteria for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, whether they fully understand what the treatment will entail and its risks and benefits, and whether they have any mental health concerns that would make it difficult for them to provide informed consent for treatment. It typically takes one to three sessions for me to perform an evaluation for a letter of support. I do not charge for these letters beyond the cost of the sessions.

Do you do telehealth?
Yes! I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform for telehealth sessions. Please note that state regulations require that my clients be physically located in Kentucky during the time of the therapy session, so if you are outside the state, I won’t be able to see you. (This also means that Kentucky residents can’t take me with them on business trips, vacations, or any other journeys out of the state.)

Do you see people in person? What about Covid?
Yes! I am fully vaccinated and will continue to get boosters as needed. I am not currently requiring masking but you are welcome to wear a mask, and I am happy to wear one upon request. I run an air purifier in my office at all times.

What does Vivaria mean?
Vivaria is the collective name for any kind of artificial habitat, such as a terrarium or aquarium. Vivarium in Latin means “place of life.” I thought this was a great name for a therapy practice because therapy is a smaller, contained space where people can figure out how to grow and thrive.
